THE FIRST STEP OF THE USMLE®

The United States Medical Licensing Examination, Step 1, is a computer-based exam that lasts for one day and is taken by the majority of medical students at the end of their second year of medical school. It is also taken by thousands of foreign medical graduates (IMGs), who have completed their medical education outside of the United States yet seek to work as doctors in the country. There are no more than 280 multiple-choice questions on the Step 1, and the examination lasts for a total of eight hours. The examination is divided into seven segments of one hour each, and each segment consists of 40 questions.

The United States Medical Licensing Examination, Step 1, places an emphasis on fundamental scientific concepts, particularly in the fields of anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology. Additionally, tests are conducted in inter-disciplinary fields such as genetics, immunology, and nutrition.

The examination is given on an appointment-only basis during the whole calendar year. When organizing your preparation for the USMLE, be sure to account in six to nine months for the Step 1 review.
